Chainmail

Blair Vaughn-Gruler

With many paintings inspired by or referencing knitting, handwork and textiles, it wouldn’t be right to leave out chainmail. Like the protective fabric made of small metal interlocking links, the repetitive small circular shapes in the painting serve to protect – and homogenize – the underpainting beneath.

Chainmail armor was made to protect the wearer from swords and sharks and worse, so that part doesn’t apply to the analogy. That said, compulsive mark making definitely feels protective in its application and meaning. We’ll just leave it at that for now.
